27+ Best Christian Books to Read (2023)

Best Christian Books

I decided to put together a list of some of the best Christian books I think everyone should read. This list encompasses a good range of Christian literature and focused areas of study.

Most Christians, and probably people in general, do not read much anymore, let alone a wide range of topics and disciplines. It would also seem that many Christians tend to read a Christian book or Bible Study more so than simply God’s Word.

True meaning and knowledge, when it comes to the Christian faith and life, can only be found in God’s Word. For me, it is essential reading for everyone.

When we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit can bring back scripture references for us to use when engaging in the world (John 14:26). However, other facts may not be so readily available at the tip of our tongues.

Regardless, Christians should at least fill their minds with proper truth and useful knowledge to share when engaging in real-life conversations. Many Christians already struggle with their own faith or having a close relationship with God.

Perhaps, one of these Christian books can help you or a friend with whatever problem you are facing right now. Maybe, it can rekindle your faith, get you going to church again, and on the path to right living for God’s glory.

This list is not ranked in any particular order. Many of these books you may not have heard of before, while others are some of the best-selling Christian books, today.

But without further to do here are some of the best Christian books that you should read or listen to soon.

1. Replacing Darwin: The New Origin of Species by Nathaniel T. Jeanson

Description:

If Darwin were to examine the evidence today using modern science, would his conclusions be the same?

Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, published over 150 years ago, is considered one of history’s most influential books and continues to serve as the foundation of thought for evolutionary biology. Since Darwin’s time, however, new fields of science have immerged that simply give us better answers to the question of origins.

With a Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Harvard University, Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson is uniquely qualified to investigate what genetics reveal about origins.

The Origins Puzzle Comes Together

If the science surrounding origins were a puzzle, Darwin would have had fewer than 15% of the pieces to work with when he developed his theory of evolution. We now have a much greater percentage of the pieces because of modern scientific research. As Dr. Jeanson puts the new pieces together, a whole new picture emerges, giving us a testable, predictive model to explain the origin of species.

A New Scientific Revolution Begins

So what comes next? Darwin’s theory of evolution may be one of science’s longest-standing, but the latest genetics research is casting doubt on it. Are these new discoveries cause to critically reexamine Darwin’s theory? Replacing Darwin asks you to give serious consideration to modern scientific advances and reevaluate the problems that have surfaced in Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Main Topics:

  • Biblical creation
  • Genetic research
  • Critique of evolutionary theory

  • Conflict resolution
  • Healthy Relationships

3. BORN BELIEVERS BY JUSTIN L. BARRETT

Description:

Infants have a lot to make sense of in the world: Why does the sun shine and the night fall; why do some objects move in response to words, while others won’t budge; who is it that looks over them and cares for them? How the developing brain grapples with these and other questions lead children, across cultures, to naturally develop a belief in a divine power of remarkably consistent traits––a god that is a powerful creator, knowing, immortal, and good—explains noted developmental psychologist and anthropologist Justin L. Barrett in this enlightening and provocative book. In short, we are all born believers.

Belief begins in the brain. Under the sway of powerful internal and external influences, children understand their environments by imagining at least one creative and intelligent agent, a grand creator and controller that brings order and purpose to the world. Further, these beliefs in unseen super beings help organize children’s intuitions about morality and surprising life events, making life meaningful.

Summarizing scientific experiments conducted with children across the globe, Professor Barrett illustrates the ways human beings have come to develop complex belief systems about God’s omniscience, the afterlife, and the immortality of deities. He shows how the science of childhood religiosity reveals, across humanity, a “natural religion,” the organization of those beliefs that humans gravitate to organically, and how it underlies all of the world’s major religions, uniting them under one common source.

For believers and nonbelievers alike, Barrett offers a compelling argument for the human instinct for religion, as he guides all parents in how to effectively encourage children in developing a healthy constellation of beliefs about the world around them.

Main Topics:

  • Innate belief in God
  • Cognitive science
  • Faith and human nature

4. WORLDVIEWS IN CONFLICT BY RONALD H. NASH

Description:

This world is a battlefield in the arena of ideas. The prize is the heart and mind of humankind. In this book, Ronald Nash outlines the Christian way of looking at God, self, and the world. He holds that worldview up against the tests of reason, logic, and experience, particularly discussing the problems of evil and the alleged “nonsense” of the historic Christian doctrines and of Jesus’ incarnation and resurrection. He finds the Christian worldview sound and urges Christians to equip themselves intellectually to defend the faith on that battlefield. He particularly hits the attractions to our generation of naturalism and the New Age movement, pointing out their weaknesses and pitfalls as well as older worldviews.

“Christian theism is a system that commends itself to the whole person”; but Nash stresses that there is great difference between “belief that” and “belief in.”

Main Topics:

  • Christian apologetics
  • Secular worldviews
  • Faith and reason

5. FROM GOD TO US: HOW WE GOT OUR BIBLE BY NORMAN L. GEISLER & WILLIAM E. NIX

Description:

Where did the Bible come from? How do we know the right books are in the Bible? Does the Bible contain errors? What are the oldest copies we have of the Bible? How do we know that the Bible hasn’t been changed over the years? Why are there so many translations of the Bible, and which one should I use?

These are just some of the important questions about the Bible that are discussed in this book. Understanding basic facts about the origin of the Bible is essential for every Christian, but it can also be confusing and difficult.

Inspiration, the biblical canon, major manuscripts, textual criticism, early translations, and modern versions are some of the major topics discussed. Careful explanations of important points are given throughout, as the entire field of biblical introduction is covered.

Completely updated and revised edition of the 1974 work (more than 78,000 copies sold). Helpful charts have been added, along with an index of subjects, persons, and Scripture.

This book is ideally suited for Bible students, pastors, and professors. While writing for readers without previous training, the authors do not gloss over difficult and complex issues when they arise. The nature of inspiration, the extent of the canon, and the usefulness of modern versions are all clearly discussed.

The authors write: “The chain of communication from God to us is strong.  It has several solid links: inspiration, collection, transmission, and translations.  The strength of these links provide the contemporary Christian with the moral certitude that the Spirit-inspired original text of Scripture has been providentially preserved by God so that for all practical purposes the Bible in our hands is the infallible and inerrant word of God.”

Main Topics:

  • Bible History
  • Manuscript preservation
  • Translation process

6. UNDERSTANDING THE END TIMES PROPHECY BY PAUL N. BENWARE

Description:

Many Christians think of end times prophecy as a gigantic, intimidating puzzle — difficult to piece together and impossible to figure out. But every puzzle can be solved if you approach it the right way.

Paul Benware compares prophecy to a picture puzzle. Putting the edge pieces together first builds the ‘framework’ that makes it easier to fit the other pieces in their place. According to Benware, the framework for eschatology is the biblical covenants.

He begins his comprehensive survey by explaining the major covenants. Then he discusses several different interpretations of end times prophecy. Benware digs into the details of the Rapture, the Great Tribulation, the judgments and resurrections, and the millennial kingdom. But he also adds a unique, personal element to the study, answering questions such as:

-Why study bible prophecy?
-What difference does it make if I’m premillenial or amillenial?

If what the Bible says about the future puzzles you, Understanding End Times Prophecy will help you put together the pieces and see the big picture.

Main Topics:

  • End times prophecy
  • Second coming of Christ
  • Eschatology

11. THE GOD-SHAPED BRAIN BY TIMOTHY R. JENNINGS, M.D.

Description:

Brain research in neuroscience has found that our thoughts and beliefs affect our physical, mental, and spiritual health. Mind and body are interrelated, and we are designed for healthy relationships of love and trust. When we understand God as good and loving, we flourish.

Unfortunately, many of us have distorted images of God and mostly think of him in fearful, punitive ways. This leads us to unhealthy patterns of self-defeating behaviors and toxic relationships. But our lives can change when God renews our minds with a truer picture of him.

Psychiatrist Tim Jennings unveils how our brains and bodies thrive when we have a healthy understanding of who God is. He dispels common misconceptions about God and shows how different God concepts affect the brain differently. Our brains can adapt, change, and rewire with redeemed thinking that frees us from unnecessary pain and suffering. Discover how neuroscience and Scripture come together to bring healing and transformation to our lives.

This expanded edition now includes a study guide for individual reflection or group discussion, with questions for learning from Scripture, science and nature, and experience.

12. SHAME INTERRUPTED BY EDWARD T. WELCH

Description:

Shame controls far too many of us. Worthless, inferior, rejected, weak, humiliated, failure…it all adds up to wishing we could get away from others and hide. We know what shame feels like. 15. THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP BY DIETRICH BONHOEFFER

Description:

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the most important theologians of the twentieth century and contemporary with C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity, The Problem of Pain), illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus in this classic book on living as a Christian.

What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the government worker? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today?

Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between “cheap grace” and “costly grace.”

“Cheap grace,” Bonhoeffer wrote, “is the grace we bestow on ourselves…grace without discipleship….Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the girl which must be asked for, the door at which a man must know….It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life.”

The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.

  • Discipleship
  • Costly grace
  • Christian commitment

23. DESIRING GOD BY JOHN PIPER

Description:

Satisfaction…Happiness…Joy. According to John Piper, the pursuit of pleasure in God is not only permissible, but it’s also essential.

Desiring God is a paradigm-shattering work that dramatically alters common perspectives on relating to God.  Piper reveals that there really is no need to choose between duty and delight in the Christian life. In fact, for the follower of Jesus, delight is the duty as Christ is most magnified in His people when they are most satisfied in Him.

Constantly drawing on Scripture to build his case, Piper shows why pursuing maximum joy is essential to glorifying God. He discusses the implications of this for conversion, worship, love, Scripture, prayer, money, marriage, missions, and suffering.

Piper beckons us to approach God with the hedonist’s abandon. Finally, we are freed to enjoy Jesus—not only as our Lord and Savior but also as our all-surpassing, soul-satisfying Treasure.

Desiring God may turn your Christian world upside down. And that will be a good thing, for the glory of God, and for your deepest joy.

Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use.

Main Topics:

  • Christian Hedonism
  • God’s joy
  • Spiritual satisfaction

Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions?

God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts—it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter God’s love, as Francis describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.

26. THE PURSUIT OF GOD BY A.W. TOZER

Description:

The Pursuit of God provides a simple blueprint for living a life closer to God. Considered an inspirational classic, this book was listed in the collection of 100 “Best Books of the Century” by Christianity Today.

In this book, Tozer attempts to bridge this gap, helping believers to find this deeper connection to God. Each chapter reveals another way that the reader can improve his or her relationship with the Creator. For those that feel the urge to pursue God, this work is a valuable guide. It includes lessons on materialism, the proper relation of man to God, and the true value of meekness, among others.

As he often does, Tozer argues against worldliness and distraction, even within the church. “Right now we are in an age of religious complexity,” he says. “The simplicity which is in Christ is rarely found among us. In its stead are programs, methods, organizations and a world of nervous activities which occupy time and attention but can never satisfy the longing of the heart.”

A major theme of the book is developing your personal experience of God. Just as you have five senses that let you interact with the world around you, you have a spiritual sense that lets you interact with the Creator. When you accept God’s universal Presence, you start to accept that you will never be closer to Him in heaven than you are right now. But you can get to know Him better through prayer and faith.

Tozer also warns that there is no need to separate your life into two parts, the spiritual and the secular. Our sacred acts like attending church, studying the Bible, and prayer do not need to feel so divorced from the worldly acts of eating, sleeping, and working. Life is not meant to be lived with spirituality in one hemisphere, and the “real world” in another. After all, Christ Himself came to Earth in a human body, and he had to feed it and care for it just like you do.

In simple prose, Tozer helps to lead the reader out of a superficial relationship to God and toward a deeper connection with Him. It is in this pursuit that Christians can find His Presence, not just in church, but around and within them.

Main Topics:

  • Intimacy with God
  • Spiritual transformation
  • Hunger for God’s presence

Murray considered missions to be “the chief end of the church” Murray pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM).

Absolute Submission, which is based on a number of sermons by Andrew Murray, extols the virtues of ‘absolute surrender’ to God. Murray offers specific instructions for achieving this kind of surrender in one’s life.
